Sarah Walker, Edwards Family Law
About Sarah
I trained as a corporate lawyer at Clifford Chance where I worked in the London and Singapore offices before becoming a family lawyer in 2017. I have worked exclusively in family law since then. I initially worked at a city firm under the tutelage of Kelly Edwards before moving to Hughes Fowler Carruthers (“HFC”). At HFC I worked with the renowned Frances Hughes on a wide range of cases, including the seminal case of Potanina v Potanin in the Court of Appeal and the Supreme Court.
I advise a wide range of clients based in the UK and abroad. I practice all types of family law. I deal regularly with complex financial disputes, which often involve offshore trusts, complex award packages, high value business interests and inherited or pre-acquired wealth. I also work on private law children matters including relocation applications, parental alienation matters and residence and contact disputes.
I graduated with a first-class degree in history from the University of Cambridge where I was awarded the Chadburn Scholarship and Jessie Forbes Prize for academic achievement. I attended Judge Business School also in Cambridge and I have worked in the audit department of PricewaterhouseCoopers. I achieved a distinction in my Legal Practice Course at the University of Law. I have also worked for the world leading human rights organisation, Liberty. Having worked outside of family law in the commercial and human rights sphere, I bring a unique perspective to my cases.
I am committed to trying to reach amicable solutions for my clients through negotiation, mediation and other forms of alternative dispute resolution. However, I am a fierce litigator when the need arises.
I am absolutely focused on achieving a positive outcome for my clients and I am always willing to go the extra mile to achieve the best result.
What services do you provide?
I advise on all aspects of family law, whether that be advice on financial disputes, child arrangements, separation or divorce, negotiating a pre-nuptial agreement or guidance on a financial consent order.
A recent case
I recently worked on the case of Potanina v Potanin In the Court of Appeal and the Supreme Court. This Is a case In which the Supreme Court clarified the threshold for applying for permission to bring proceedings pursuant to Part III of the Matrimonial and Family Proceedings Act 1984.
In this case the parties married in Russia and lived there throughout the marriage. During the marriage, the husband accumulated wealth estimated to amount to in excess of $20 billion. Most of the assets were held in various trusts and corporate vehicles, through which the husband was the beneficial owner. The parties divorced in Russia in 2014. The wife received only a tiny fraction of the overall wealth. After she moved to England she made an application pursuant to Part III In this jurisdiction.
